The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) recently filled two senior administrative positions with the appointment of José C. Massó, III, as director of community relations and the promotion of James P. Doolin to chief development officer. Massport owns and operates Boston Logan International Airport, Hanscom Field, Worcester Regional Airport, the public cruise and container terminals in the Port of Boston, and real estate holdings in the city.

Major agreements with significant implications for the long-term growth of Port Corpus Christi were approved by its governing commission on April 9. In the first instance, the commissioners approved an agreement with the U.S. Maritime Administration outlining the terms and conditions for the use of a $10 million TIGER grant. The grant was awarded on June 21, 2012, by the U.S. Department of Transportation for Phase I construction of the Nueces River Rail Yard (NRRY). At the same meeting, the port commissioners unanimously approved a long-term lease agreement with voestalpine Texas Holding, LLC, a subsidiary of multinational industrial group headquartered in Linz, Austria.

 At a recent meeting, the Port of Everett Commission authorized staff to solicit bids for the final clean up of the Everett Shipyard upland, a 6-acre site in the heart of the Marina District. The area was home to a ship repair operation for many years until 2009, when Everett Shipyard, now owned by Vigor Marine, moved its operations to the port’s deep-water shipping terminals. By cleaning up the site, the port intends to create a healthy environment and restore the economic prosperity to the area.

 A Spanish company, Grup TCB of Barcelona, has been selected to develop and operates the new Puerto Quetzal Container Terminal (TCQ) in Puerto Quetzal on Guatemala’s Pacific coast. As part of its 25-year concession agreement, which includes an option for renewal, the company will invest $250 million in new infrastructure.

At its April 9 meeting, the Port of Grays Harbor Commission approved an “Option to Lease” property at Terminal 3 to Grays Harbor Rail Terminal, LLC, a local subsidiary of U.S. Development (USD). The option was granted a month after U.S. Development presented its findings from a preliminary feasibility study resulting from an Access Agreement that began in September 2012.

The Port of Los Angeles has made additional funding available for its Marina Engine Exchange Program, incentivizing boat owners to replace their older, high-polluting outboard motors with California Air Resources Board (CARB)-certified, “three star" ultra-low emission-rated engines (up to 10 horsepower).

 The Port of New Orleans reports general cargo volumes increased in 2012 for the third consecutive year, up 8.6 percent from 2011 to 7.55 million short tons. Growth came chiefly from breakbulk cargo, particularly steel, which jumped 38.4 percent to 1.9 million tons. Other top performing commodities were chemical exports (up 5.4 percent to 1.75 million tons) and poultry and other agricultural product exports (up 22.8 percent to 496,000 tons).

 The Board of Directors of the Saint John Port Authority recently elected new officers to terms of two years each. Named chair was Peter Gaulton, a former vice chair who had served as interim chair since November 9, 2012. Elected vice chair was Phil Brewer, a port authority board member since 2011 and chair of its Human Resources and Audit committees.

The Port of Seattle will welcome United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) to its harbor in May. UASC’s AWN1 string will call Terminal 30 in partnership with China Shipping Container Lines’ (CSCL) existing ANW1 service. UASC will join the service with two 4,250 TEU ships, while CSCL will upgrade its Asia/ Pacific Northwest service by contributing two vessels of the same size.

Hampton Roads Chassis Pool (HRCP) has started implementing the latest updates and features to the Option 2 program that enables ocean carriers to exit chassis-provisioning in the Port of Virginia. HRCP II and Virginia Intermodal Management are wholly owned subsidiaries of Virginia International Terminals, which in turn is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Virginia Port Authority. The technology used by HRCP has undergone an update that adds new features, simplified processes and new ocean carrier functionality. Additionally, new ocean carrier partners, with exception-based billing rules, have joined the carriers already using the service.

Clarkson's Bulk Carrier Register is a comprehensive directory to bulk carriers, ore carriers and combination carriers of 10,000 dwt and over, including vessels confined to the Great Lakes. Clarkson’s data show that as of January 1, 2013, the world bulk fleet consisted of 9,490 ships with a total capacity of 679.2 million tons, representing increases in fleet size and deadweight capacity of 6.6 percent and 10.4 percent, respectively, from the year before.
