 Drew Heaphy, director of administration for the St. Bernard Port, Harbor and Terminal District, in Chalmette, La., has completed AAPA's Professional Port Manager (PPM®) program. Mr. Heaphy is the first from his port and the 87th candidate to be certified since the program’s inception in 1995. His PPM® paper, The Louisiana Port Construction and Development Program and the Affects of the Program on the Port of St. Bernard, is posted on the AAPA website, where it is free for downloading by members and available for purchase by non-members.

A record 903.8 million metric tons of cargo moved through the the Brazilian port system in 2012, according to data compiled and reported by the national waterways agency, Agência Nacional de Transportes Aquaviários (ANTAQ). It was the third consecutive year of record tonnage and an increase of 2.0 percent from 2011. The tonnage total includes foreign, cabotage and “inland navigation” cargo handled at the nation’s 33 “organized ports” and 103 “private-use terminals.” Brazil’s waterborne trade tonnage exceeds that of every country in the Western Hemisphere except the United States.

Port Corpus Christi’s La Quinta Trade Gateway has been selected as the site for the development of a $700 million direct reduction facility by voestalpine, a steel making and processing group headquartered in Linz, Austria. The deal, announced March 13 in Corpus Christi, is subject to the successful completion and execution of all agreements with various regional and state of Texas entities.

A new economic impact study released by the Northwest and Canada Cruise Association (NWCCA) and its destination partners shows that approximately 1,100 cruise ship calls generated more than 2 million passenger arrivals at Canadian ports and economic impacts across Canada amounting to C$2.38 billion in 2012.

 Cargo shipments through the Port of Hamilton continued to grow and diversity in 2012. As reported by the port authority, the primary impetus came from the agricultural center, with increases over 2011 of 27 percent for fertilizer and 6 percent for grain. Soybeans grown in Ontario supplied nearly a million tons of cargo, most of it bound for overseas markets. Agriculture accounted for 16 percent of the port’s cargo tonnage in 2012, up from 8 percent just five years ago.

The Virginia Port Authority (VPA) reports container throughput at its Hampton Roads maritime terminals posted their 13th consecutive month of year-on-year growth in February with a 7.9 percent increase from February 2012 to 169,390 TEUs. Containerized cargo also increased, by 7.1 percent to 1,416,350 short tons.
