Michael A. Leone was recently appointed the newest PIANC USA commissioner. Mr. Leone retired last fall as port director at the Massachusetts Port Authority. He twice served as AAPA chairman of the board in 2003-2004 and 2009-2010.

On Feb. 15, AAPA’s Finance Committee produced a webinar on asset management. The 90-minute program reviewed asset management basics: definition, drivers and current status in ports. The webinar concluded with case studies at the ports of Tacoma, Houston, Seattle, Metro Vancouver and Hueneme.

2012 was a record year for autos, containers and ro/ro cargo at Baltimore’s public marine terminals, according to data reported by the Maryland Port Administration. Export/import cargo handled port-wide by public and private terminals amounted to 36.8 million short tons with a record value of $54 billion.

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) Board of Directors on Feb. 21 approved a rolling five-year program consisting of more than $1 billion to fund 341 projects as part of the agency’s fiscal year 2013-2017 comprehensive financial plan of capital improvements.

During its annual retreat on Feb. 20, the three-member Port of Everett Commission adopted a new vision and values for the economic enterprise. Declaring "We are valued for operating in a sustainable manner that improves the community, environment and economy," the commissioners approved a set of core values to advance the organization and confirm the way the port operates.

Toyota announced Feb. 26 that it will be exporting U.S.-assembled Venza crossover vehicles to Russia and Ukraine via the Port of Brunswick. The vehicles will be loaded at the Georgia Ports Authority’s Colonel’s Island Ro/Ro Terminal, which in 2012 handled a record 612,489 auto and machinery units, up from 497,404 in the previous year.

The Port of Green Bay reports cargo throughput during the 2012 shipping season dropped 11 percent from the year before to 1,917,651 metric tons. Several factors contributed to last year’s tonnage decline. A succession of mild winters lowered demand for road salt, costing the port a 40 percent drop in salt shipments. Low cost natural gas undercut demand for coal, resulting in an 11 percent decline in coal shipments in 2012 and the prospect of future tonnage declines.

The Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority approved the port authority's 2013 operating budget at a special meeting on Feb. 26. The budget reflects a trend of growth in operating revenue, net income and cash flow, allowing for continued reinvestment to maintain job creation and economic development for the region.

At their meeting on Feb. 25, the Board of Directors of the Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) voted unanimously to inform the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that JAXPORT will pursue a harbor “deep enough to remain competitive” by supplying additional local investment for the project.

A tree-planting initiative funded by the Port of Long Beach to beautify the city and cut greenhouse gases kicked off Feb. 23 at a local park. “I Dig Long Beach – 6,000 Trees by 2020” began with the planting of 50 trees in Silverado Park and adjacent John Muir Elementary School.

The Los Angeles Harbor Commission has authorized Port of Los Angeles officials to enter into exclusive negotiations with LA Waterfront Alliance – a collaboration between The Ratkovich Company and Jerico Development – to redevelop the Ports O’ Call Village, a 30-acre San Pedro waterfront property on the port’s main channel and adjacent to San Pedro’s historic downtown business district.

Carnival Cruise Lines recently signed a three-year extension of its berthing agreement with the Port of New Orleans. The agreement took effect Feb. 13, runs through Feb. 12, 2016, and includes options for two one-year extensions.
