In a report released last month, Standard & Poor’s reaffirmed the Port of Everett’s bond rating of ‘A-.” The agency based its action on the port’s “strong financial position, with solid debt service coverage.” The strong rating translates into interest cost savings for the port. The average rate on its bonds is 4.32 percent.

Canadian Transport Minister Denis Lebel on Feb. 14 appointed Lantz Siteman as the port users’ nominee to the Board of Directors of the Halifax Port Authority. Mr. Siteman was Canada Trust Company's district vice president and regional manager for Atlantic Canada until he retired in 2001.

The Los Angeles Harbor Commission has approved a resolution initiating an Environmental Impact Statement/Environmental Impact Report (EIS/EIR) on a proposed berth-improvement project by Yusen Terminals Inc. (YTI). The start of the EIR process is the first step in YTl’s proposed plan to deepen and improve its terminal facilities, allowing the terminal operator to accommodate next-generation vessels and increase cargo volume at its site.

Mexico’s ports performed well in 2012, handling just more than 282 million metric tons of cargo, roughly the same as 2011, according to preliminary data reported by the national port office, Dirección General de Puertos, in Mexico City. Foreign trade grew by 1.4 percent while domestic trade fell by 4.8 percent, giving Mexico its second highest cargo tonnage total since 2006. The Pacific Coast port range accounted for 122.5 million tons (+2.0 percent) and the Mexican Gulf for 150.6 million tons (-1.9 percent) of the cargo handled in 2012.

The port authority’s 2012 year-end statistics report shows that Port Metro Vancouver handled 124 million metric tons of cargo through the end of December, an increase of 1.0 percent from 2011. That included 96.8 million tons of import/export cargo (+1.0 percent) and domestic shipments totaling 27.1 million tons (+1.0 percent).

The Port of Portland's marine franchise in 2012 recorded notable calendar year gains in steel and auto volumes despite disruptions related to a jurisdictional dispute and contract negotiations in the latter half of the year. The year-end total of 12.4 million short tons, though down 8 percent from 2011, gave the port its sixth best tonnage year on record.

The Prince Rupert Port Authority on Feb. 15 welcomed Robert Bruce Ellis Hallsor to its Board of Directors. His appointment was made on the recommendation of the Denis Lebel, Canada’s Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, in consultation with port users.

The Port of San Diego will soon begin a project to improve the air quality around its Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal. On Feb. 12, the Board of Port Commissioners approved a non-appealable coastal development permit to bring shore power to the marine terminal, located on San Diego's waterfront. The project is a part of the port's capital improvement program (CIP). The CIP sets aside funds for new facilities, road upgrades, parks or other improvements in the port's member cities.

The Virginia Port Authority reports container throughput at its Hampton Roads maritime terminals totaled 158,766 TEUs in January, an increase from a year ago of 2.9 percent, or 4,466 TEUs. The general cargo tally of 1,317,975 short tons was up 4.2 percent. That includes containerized (+4.8 percent) and breakbulk cargo (-18.4 percent).

Professor Thomas J. Dowd Jr., a respected port management expert and educator, passed away Feb. 8 in Seattle at the age of 77. He was a frequent presenter at AAPA conventions and seminars, an active member of the AAPA Planning & Research and Curriculum committees, and the first to complete the AAPA PPM® certification program. AAPA honored him with its Distinguished Service Award and honorary lifetime membership.
