America’s waterborne foreign trade took a downward turn in 2012, falling 3.7 percent from the year before to just more than 1.29 billion metric tons, according to data collected and reported by the U.S. Census Bureau. That reversed the pattern of growth of the previous two years, dropping trade tonnage well below levels attained in the peak years of 2008 and 2007.

With a tentative contract deal reached with East Coast and Gulf Coast dockworkers but a key West Coast agreement unsettled, import cargo volume at the nation’s major retail container ports should increase 8.5 percent in February over the same month last year, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released February 8 by the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates.

A newly released report delineates the modal and environmental advantages of using marine shipping to transport goods in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway region. The Environmental and Social Impacts of Marine Transport in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway Region study was conducted by transportation consultants and peer reviewed by independent experts. It found that Great Lakes ships are more fuel-efficient and emit fewer greenhouse gases per thousand cargo-ton miles than land-based alternatives.

The Port of Long Beach has awarded more than $600,000 to the Long Beach Comprehensive Health Center (LBCHC) to establish a cardiopulmonary lab that will benefit patients from underserved Long Beach communities. The cardiopulmonary lab is one of several projects funded by the port in 2012 through its Community Mitigation Grant Programs.

The Port of Los Angeles’ environmental programs and green technologies are the focus of a new children’s book, "A Cleaner Port. A Brighter Future. The Greening of the Port of Los Angeles" (Cascade Pass). Written by Robyn C. Friend and Judith Love Cohen, the book is the sixth in a series of environmental children’s books dedicated to teaching youth about the importance of environmental conservation and preservation.

The Port of Milwaukee in 2012 experienced a 34.5 percent in cargo tonnage bound to and from foreign ports via the Saint Lawrence Seaway. The year-end total of 210,406 metric tons included imported steel for local use locally and large finished goods shipped to markets around the world.

The Board of Commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has authorized the investment of $2.25 million during the next three years to support construction pre-apprenticeship training programs in both states. The agency is working with unions, non-profit groups and government agencies in both New York and New Jersey to fund programs that help high school students, vocational school students, minorities and women develop the skills they need to obtain entry-level employment opportunities that may lead to careers in the construction industry.

Robert “Rusty” Barkerding Jr. was sworn in February 8 for a five-year term as the newest member of the board of commissioners of the Port of New Orleans. He replaces Valerie S. Cahill, whose term had expired. Mr. Barkerding is president and CEO of Admiral Security Services, a maritime-focused security firm that works in conjunction with the U.S. Government to provide armed guards to vessels and ports on the Lower Mississippi River in Louisiana and in ports in Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

In response to ongoing financial challenges related to Terminal 6 container operations, the Portland (OR) Port Commissioners on February 13 voted 6-to-1 with one abstention to approve a $3.7 million partial rent rebate program for its terminal manager, ICTSI Oregon. ICTSI Oregon manages the terminal under a 25-year lease.
