The Alabama State Port Authority collected a record $144.6 million in revenues during the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2012. The port authority says the record revenues resulted principally from increased steel, export coal and container traffic throughput at its facilities in the Port of Mobile.

The Aruba Ports Authority welcomed a record 118,542 passengers in January, a 24.9 percent increase from January 2012. The previous record, 110,363, was set in March 2011, which was also the first month the port's passenger count exceeded 100,000. This January as well, the port received 64 cruise ship calls and 47,483 cruise ship crew members. Cruise traffic during all of 2012 consisted of 294 ship calls, 582,309 passengers and 233,327 crew members.

The Port of Brownsville's Foreign Trade Zone No. 62 ranked first in Texas and fourth nationally in export shipments in FY 2011, with more than $750 million worth of merchandise, according to the newly released 73rd Annual Report of the Foreign-Trade Zones Board to the Congress of the United States. The zone's top three export commodities by value were petroleum products, steel and lubricating oils.

The Port of Everett's Chief Financial Officer Karen Clements will be retiring in September 2013 after 18 years as a port employee. As CFO, Clements is responsible for the port's $56 million-plus capital and operating budgets, its investment portfolios, risk management, bond issuance and overseeing information technology. During her tenure, she led the port to 15 consecutive years of clean audits.

After 11 years of working with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Port Freeport has now received a positive report from the Chief of Engineers on the Freeport Harbor Channel Improvement Project (FHCIP). The project would widen the channel and deepen it from 45 feet to 55 feet.

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) ended calendar year 2012 with December showing increases system wide from December 2011 of 11.7 percent by total cargo tonnage and 21.8 percent by auto and machinery units. The December data also show containerized cargo up 4.2 percent to 1.76 million tons and container box movements up 2.2 percent to 219,128 TEUs.

Port of Lake Charles Commissioners on Jan. 24 approved an option for a long-term lease agreement on 200 acres with G2X Energy, a Houston-based company that plans to build a $1.3 billion natural gas-to-gasoline facility on port property located on the Industrial Canal. The G2X Energy project is expected to create 243 new direct jobs, resulting in an estimated 748 new indirect jobs. According to the company, the direct jobs will pay an average salary of $66,500 plus benefits.

The Government of Canada is contributing a maximum of C$19.9 million through its Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative (APGCI) to a C$45 million overpass on the Deltaport Causeway, part of Port Metro Vancouver's Deltaport Terminal, Road and Rail Improvement Project.

Port Everglades was top exporting Foreign Trade Zone in the country for warehousing and distribution activity in FY 2010-2011, according to the 73rd Annual Report of the Foreign-Trade Zones Board to the Congress of the United States. Data show that Port Everglades' Foreign Trade Zone No. 25 (FTZ) experienced increases from FY 2009-2010 of 68 percent in merchandise received and 66 percent in exports. In 2011, merchandise received and exported from the FTZ reached $3.7 billion and $3.6 billion, respectively.

The Prince Rupert Port Authority and CN have completed a long-term project to quell mandatory train whistling at two waterfront rail crossings. Two new crossing signals flash bright red lights and emit bell-ringing audio when a train is within one quarter-mile of the crossing, requiring vehicles and pedestrians to refrain from crossing.

Double-digit gains for both imports and exports boosted container volumes at the Port of Tacoma by 16 percent in 2012 to 1.7 million TEUs in 2012, the most since 2008. Containerized imports jumped by more than 27 percent, bolstered by strong demand for auto parts, furniture, toys and sporting goods, while exports were up nearly 22 percent, thanks to agricultural products and bulk commodities, such as scrap paper.

The Virginia Port Authority (VPA) continues to reduce air pollution from its terminals in Hampton Roads Harbor as a result of steps taken to modernize equipment, utilize low-emissions diesel fuel and incentivize the use of clean diesel and fuel-saving technology. The reductions are reflected in a comprehensive air emissions inventory of operations at the VPA’s marine terminals in 2011. The study was commissioned by the VPA as part of its ongoing, proactive environmental policy.
