Import cargo volume at the top U.S. containerized retail import cargo handling ports will set a monthly record in October, predicts the monthly Global Port Tracker report released October 10 by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates. Container movements through the Port of Fortaleza during the first nine months of 2014 jumped 14.1 percent from a year ago, according the state port authority, Companhia Docas do Ceará. The San Pedro Harbor ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles together handled container volumes totaling just over 1.4 million TEUs in September, up from 1.2 million TEUs in the preceding month, and an 8.2 percent increase from the September 2013.  Increased Asian and Latin American trade service offerings contributed to a 22 percent upswing in container movements at North Carolina’s Port of Wilmington during the first quarter of the fiscal year that began July 1, 2014. September was the busiest month at the Port of Oakland in more than a year, with container volumes of 207,412 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 2.9 percent and the most since August 2013. The Port of Redwood City reports 451,031 metric tons of cargo crossed its docks during the first quarter of the fiscal year that began July 1, a 23-percent increase from first quarter FY 2014. Container traffic surged through the Port of Tacoma in September, posting a 20 percent gain over the same month last year and marking the busiest month since September 2005.

Port of Long Beach
A new 600-foot concrete and steel wharf is now in service in the Rensselaer area of the Port of Albany. The Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) has added a valuable warehousing asset to its portfolio of logistics-focused real estate. Port Tampa Bay commissioners have approved the purchase of two post-Panamax gantry cranes from a Chinese manufacturer for $24 million.

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners recently filled key executive posts with staff veterans as the Port of Long Beach continues to undergo a reorganization initiated by Chief Executive Jon Slangerup. Lt. Colonel Edward Cetnar of the New Jersey State Police joins the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey next month as deputy superintendent of police.

Port Everglades is making it easier and more convenient for cruise guests to plan ocean-bound vacations with an online version of the Cruise Guide and a user-friendly cruise app for mobile devices.

The board of commissioners of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey has approved a Freedom of Information policy that will take effect on January 1. The revised policy will provide the public with an enhanced ability to obtain agency records and a two-tiered appeals process in the event a request for a document is denied.

The Port of South Louisiana and the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) have agreed to an amended version of their memorandum of agreement of January 31, 2013. The amended MOU was signed October 14 by South Louisiana Port Executive Director Paul G. Aucoin and ACP Administrator Jorge Quijano at canal authority headquarters in Panama City.

Florida East Coast Railway (FECR) and PortMiami are offering the Sunshine Gateway service, which includes on-dock intermodal rail capabilities. Hamburg Süd is beefing up the reefer container capacity of its north/south trade route linking Philadelphia and other U.S. East Coast ports with Argentina, Brazil and Argentina by deploying seven  5,560 container ships each equipped with 1,365 reefer plugs.
