New data released by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) show that the North American cruise industry continued to expand in 2013, generating employment, income and other economic benefits throughout the U.S. economy. Port Everglades will kick off its 2014-2015 winter cruise season by hosting the traditional naming ceremony for Princess Cruises’ Regal Princess, welcoming Resorts Worlds' Bimini SuperFast day cruise, and celebrating the grand opening of its completely renovated Cruise Terminal 4.

The San Pedro Harbor ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles together handled container volumes totaling just over 1.3 million TEUs in August, about the same as the preceding month and down 0.7 percent from a year ago. August was a record-setter for The Port of Virginia, putting the port on pace for an historic year.

Washington State DOT Secretary Lynn Peterson has appointed John Klekotka, P.E., chief of engineering and planning at the Port of Everett, to represent public ports on the Transportation Improvement Board. Environmental attorney Tracy Egoscue joined the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners Sept. 16 as the first commissioner appointed by newly elected Mayor Robert Garcia.

AAPA has slated 11 maritime industry programs for 2015, including its eighth annual Shifting International Trade Routes workshop in Tampa, Fla., Jan. 29-30; its annual Spring Conference in Washington, D.C., April 20-21; and its Annual Convention and Exposition, Oct. 4-8, being held in Miami, Fla., and hosted by PortMiami.

Two Port of Long Beach grant-funded environmental projects were ceremoniously opened Sept. 10 at the Century Villages of Cabrillo homeless rehabilitation complex in West Long Beach. Port Metro Vancouver’s EcoAction program, which promotes emissions reductions for ocean-going vessels by offering financial incentives through discounted harbor due rates, has been awarded a Clean50 Top Project award for advancing sustainability in Canada.

Port Canaveral Scrap Terminal LLC (PCST), a bulk ferrous scrap exporter, has signed a lease with the Canaveral Port Authority to operate a terminal in the north cargo area at Port Canaveral. Port Manatee Scrap Metal Inc. began exporting scrap metal to Mexico from Port Manatee with the September call of the bulk carrier Sen Treasure.

The board of commissioners of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey on Sept. 17 approved a major redevelopment of Greenville Yard that will include a new ExpressRail facility – the fourth of its type to be built by the agency – that will support the adjacent Global Marine Terminal.

Starting Oct. 1, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Department becomes responsible for law enforcement and seaport security services at Port Canaveral as part of a $4.9 million annual contract. Port Metro Vancouver on Sept. 9 unveiled new patrol vessels and other operations and security assets that will help maintain the safe, secure, efficient and reliable movement of marine traffic and cargo within its jurisdiction.
