Hanjin Shipping began direct calls at the Port of Boston with the Aug. 1 arrival of the 4,250 TEU container ship Hanjin Milano at Massport’s Conley Terminal. Port Everglades expects to gain an additional 30,000 containers from King Ocean’s consolidation at Sun Terminal of various Eastern Caribbean services that previously called another port. Effective Sept. 1, 2014, the Port of Stockton’s M-580 Marine Highway container-on-barge demonstration project will transition a weekly to an "as-needed" service.

In a strong second quarter showing, intermodal posted gains across all segments, according to the Intermodal Association of North America’s (IANA) Intermodal Market Trends & Statistics report. Container volumes set a record at the Port of New York and New Jersey during the first six months of 2014. Through July of the navigation season that began March 28, more than 15 million metric tons of cargo moved through the St. Lawrence Seaway, down 4 percent from a year ago, according to data reported by Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (SLSDC).

In a ceremonial exchange on July 29, Lake Charles Port Executive Director Bill Rase handed over the keys to a newly renovated port building to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials. A partnership between the Port of Santa Marta and Panama-based Fast Terminal International has transformed a Santa Marta facility into Colombia’s first specialized ro/ro operation.

The PortMiami Tunnel opened August 3, with officials from the partnering agencies – Miami-Dade County, the City of Miami, the Federal Highway Administration, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Miami Access Tunnel, Bouygues Civil Works Florida and PortMiami participating in the first official drive-thru.
