APM Terminals and Colombia-based port and terminal operating operator Compañia de Puertos Asociados S.A. (Compas S.A.) have signed a joint venture agreement to manage and operate Compas S.A.’s existing multipurpose Cartagena Terminal. The two companies will invest more than US$200 million in upgrading the terminal in South America’s second busiest container port.

The San Pedro Harbor ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles together handled container volumes totaling nearly 1.9 million TEUs in July, an increase of 6.4 percent from the preceding month and 6.8 compared to July 2014. Import volume at America’s leading containerized retail cargo handling ports is expected to increase 3.6 percent this month as retailers begin to bring in merchandise for the holiday season, according to the monthly Global Port Tracker report released August 7 by the National Retail Federation and Hackett Associates. St. Lawrence Seaway traffic fell in July, but "it was a solid month overall for our U.S. Great Lakes/St. Lawrence Seaway System ports," says the Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. The Port of Virginia reports container throughput for July, the first month of its fiscal year 2016, totaled 225,988 TEUs, an increase from last year of 8.8 percent.

The Port of Seattle signed a 15-year lease on August 11 with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NHLC), parent company of Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. The deal secures NCLH ships in Seattle for the full term of the lease and provides passenger volume guarantees estimated to bring $73 million dollars of revenue to the port. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Jade will be homeported in Tampa for the 2016-17 fall/winter cruise season, sailing mainly on Western Caribbean itineraries.
