John Farrell, a Prince Rupert resident and business owner with extensive leadership experience in the community, is the newest member of the board of directors of the Prince Rupert Port Authority. Mr. Farrell was appointed by the City of Prince Rupert and the District of Port Edward, effective May 1, 2015.

Canadian Transport Minister Lisa Raitt, Minister of Transport on April 24 announced a new Ports Asset Transfer Program to facilitate the transfer of 50 Transport Canada-owned port facilities to "other federal agencies, provincial and municipal governments, aboriginal communities and other interested parties." The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority board has 22 approved $7.9 million, funded fully through grants and forgivable loans, for construction of a new warehouse and the purchase of cranes and other equipment to support the Cleveland-Europe Express liner service. Port Metro Vancouver has submitted a comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. The proposed project entails the development and construction of a three-berth deep-sea container terminal with throughput capacity of 2.4 million TEUs annually at Roberts Bank in Delta (BC).

The Ohio River Port of Indiana-Jeffersonville recorded the highest quarterly shipments in its 30-year history during the first quarter of 2015, thanks in part to a 30 percent jump in fertilizer shipments and a more than doubling of steel tonnage. First quarter data reported by the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA) point to across the board gains for every major cargo category, including containers, steel, forest products, cocoa beans, project cargo, ro/ro and liquid bulk.

The 8,800-TEU MOL Northern Juvenile set a record April 24 as the largest container cargo ship to ever call the Port of Jacksonville. The ship docked at JAXPORT’S TraPac Container Terminal following a voyage from Asia to the U.S. East Coast via the Suez Canal.

MSC Cruises announced April 22 that after a summer season cruising the Mediterranean, MSC Divina will return to PortMiami for year round sailings to the Caribbean starting November 2015. Delivered in 2012, the 139,400 gt vessel can accommodate up to 3,959 passengers and 1,325 passengers. Port Metro Vancouver’s 2015 Alaska cruise season officially kicked off April 29 with the arrival of the Ruby Princess at Canada Place. The port authority is expecting another strong season, with an estimated 800,154 passengers on 227 visits by 32 vessels. The May 2 docking of Holland America’s Westerdam signaled the start of the 2015 cruise season at the Port of Seattle. This year the port is expecting 192 ship calls and an estimated 895,055 revenue passengers at its Smith Cove and Bell Street Pier cruise facilities.

For six years, the Port of Olympia has been supporting local economic development through its Small Cities Program. The program requires an equal cash match from the city. The port awards the funds after a city has completed the project and submitted the required information.

The Port of Vancouver USA received its fifth consecutive clean audit from the Washington State Auditor’s Office (SAO) on April 27. The audit period was from January 1, 2014, through December 31, 2014. No deficiencies were found. The Port of Virginia earned an operating profit of $1.6 million in March, reversing the losses of January and February. The fiscal-year-to-date result is an operating profit of $6.2 million, versus a prior-year operating loss of $16.5 million, or an improvement of $22.7 million when compared with March 2014.
