Martin Marietta utilized the new and improved bulk conveyor system at Port Canaveral for the first time on January 8, when the Bahamas Spirit discharged limestone at South Cargo Pier 4. International freight forwarder Fracht USA/Germany completed one of the heaviest project cargo lifts ever at the Port of New Orleans on January 12 by successfully discharging a 718-ton, 164-foot-long absorption tower from ship-to-barge.

The commissioners of the Port of Corpus Christi Authority elected officers and welcomed a new member at its first meeting of 2015.  Janiece M. Longoria was unanimously reappointed chairman of the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority in a joint session of the Harris County Commissioners Court and the Houston City Council on January 12. Jess Herrera took the helm on January 15 for his sixth term as president of the board of commissioners of the Port of Hueneme.  Marla Bleavins has joined the Port of Los Angeles as chief financial officer.  Leonard Faucher is the new marine terminal director at the Port of Olympia.

Port of Long Beach
Container volumes at the Port of Oakland reached an all-time high in 2014 of 2.394 million TEUs.  Prince Rupert’s container, grain, and wood pellet trades soared to record levels, but coal and tonnage overall declined in 2014, according to data released by the port authority. Port Saint John reports dry bulk and container cargo tonnage experienced a second consecutive year of double-digit growth in 2014.

Port Freeport (TX) has signed a 10-year contract with ro/ro vessel operator Höegh Autoliners. Sea Star Line, LLC announced January 16 it had entered into an agreement to lease two barges for a container service between Puerto Rico and the Port of Jacksonville. The Port of Virginia describes ocean carrier Yang Ming’s decision to offer a Richmond bill of lading as a major service enhancer for the Port of Richmond.

Port of New Orleans cruise terminals handled more than 1 million cruise passengers in 2014 for the first time ever – a total of 1,104,325 embarkations and disembarkations. That was up 2.6 percent from 2013 and gave the Crescent City port its fourth straight record cruise year.

Port Everglades is expanding its environmental efforts by signing on with Green Marine, a voluntary environmental program for the maritime industry in North America.  San Diego’s Board of Port Commissioners has approved $384,024 in funding to provide environmental education to more than 21,000 students within the San Diego Bay watershed.
