The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says it has made significant improvements in moving cargo on and off seaport terminals since the beginning of this year when snow and historic low temperatures forced them to suspend operations, resulting in cargo backups. A rail safety consultancy finds little risk of train derailment at the new rail entrance to the Port of Vancouver USA.

Eugene Kwan has been elected vice chair of the board of directors of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority. The North Carolina State Ports Authority board on March 27 welcomed new board members Tom Adams, Bill Keadey and Bill McMahon and named Paul J. Cozza the agency's new executive director. Florida Gov. Rick Scott has reappointed Patrick H. Allman III to the Tampa Port Commission. Jim Bibbs is the Virginia Port Authority's new chief human resources officer.

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reports container throughput exceeded 2.0 million TEUs during the first eight months of FY 2013-2014. PortMiami took delivery of its first direct shipment of Peruvian blueberries on March 16. The Port of New Orleans has contracted with an agency headquartered in Mumbai to spearhead its pursuit of trade opportunities in India. Breakbulk cargo and auto import volumes posted gains through February at the Port of Tacoma, but container volumes continued to lag.

Mississippi State Port Authority at Gulf Port
Francis E. "Hank" Lauricella, a former chairman of the board of commissioners of the Port of New Orleans, passed away March 25 at the Ochsner Medical Center in Jefferson (LA). He was 83.
