Import volume at the major U.S. containerized retail cargo handling ports is expected to increase 12.4 percent in March and will continue growing at least through July, according to the latest Global Port Tracker report. The Virginia Port Authority (VPA) reports February was yet another month of growth for its Hampton Roads container terminals, with volume up 6.0 percent from a year ago to 179,524 TEUs.

The governing board of the Port of Hueneme has adopted a resolution committing the port to water conservation measures in response to the statewide drought. Reduced electrical rates and infrastructure proposals approved by the California Public Utilities Commission will save Port of Long Beach tenants $350 million over the next 24 years, enabling them to forward with electrification and environment improvement projects.

The Halifax Port Authority (HPA) reports construction is underway on a shore power system for cruise vessels and will be completed in time for the 2014 cruise season. New York City's cruise industry generated a total economic impact of nearly $230 million in 2013, according to a study released March 11 by the New York City Economic Development Commission. Port Everglades premiered a video promoting its cruise business during last week's Cruise Shipping Miami trade show.
