With favorable approval from the Chief of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and inclusion in the first draft of the House legislation, widening and deepening of Port Canaveral harbor will begin this fall. The Port of Everett Commission voted at its September 10 meeting to accept the Mukilteo Tank Farm from the U.S. Air Force. Port Manatee and The Pasha Group are partnering to develop and market a full-service, multipurpose roll-on/roll-off terminal near the entrance to Tampa Bay.

Containerized cargo volume at the Port of Long Beach reached 630,292 TEUs in August, a 16 percent increase from a year ago and its highest monthly total since October 2007. The U.S. Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation reports U.S. Great Lakes ports spent August working on infrastructure projects and securing new cargo shipments. The Virginia Port Authority reports container throughput at its Hampton Roads terminals totaled 198,329 TEUs in August, up 5.1 percent from a year ago.

The editors of Graphic Design USA last week notified Washington, D.C.-based Rubin Meyer Communications, creator of AAPA’s new "Endangered Seaports: The Big Picture" infographic, that the illustrated port industry fact sheet will receive a 2013 Certificate of Excellence award, in the Posters classification. The national design award honors outstanding new work by advertising agencies, graphic design firms and in-house graphics departments, spotlighting creativity in print, packaging, point-of-purchase, internet, interactive and motion graphics.

The Port of Bellingham is partnering with the Washington State Department of Ecology (DOE) in an effort to make the Bellingham Bay shoreline more fish friendly. Port Metro Vancouver on September 18 announced two initiatives to improve municipal waterways, including a five-year program to remove derelict structures and vessels from Fraser River municipalities and a planned partnership with the City of Port Moody aimed at ensuring safer, cleaner recreational boating.
