Hugh W. McConnell, director of operations for the Port of Caddo-Bossier in Shreveport, La., has completed AAPA's Professional Port Manager (PPM®) program. Mr. McConnell is the third from his port and the 88th candidate to be certified since the program's inception in 1995.

The final two presenters to be added to AAPA's packed agenda for next month's workshop on port economic development are: Jon Berger, CEO for Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. LLC, who will lead the discussion on "Ideas and Opportunities for Port Business Expansion," and Kathryn McDermott, deputy executive director for the Port of Los Angeles, who will open the discussion and introduce the speakers for the session titled "Sparking Investments in Industrial and Commercial Properties."

The AAPA Security Caucus met in Washington, D.C., on May 20 and 21 to discuss security policy issues with staff from Capitol Hill and representatives from federal agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Coast Guard (USCG), the Transportation Security Administration, the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, the DHS Threat and Risk Analysis Center, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

AAPA conducted its Port Technology Seminar and Vendor Gallery May 14-16 in Jacksonville, Fla. Organized by the association's Information Technology Committee, the seminar touched on a wide variety of subjects related to the use of technology in and around ports.

The Port of Baltimore welcomed the newest addition to its auto portfolio on May 24 when approximately 2500 Fiat 500 L's arrived at Fairfield Marine Terminal aboard the Grimaldi car carrier Grand Benelux. They are the first of 30,000 Fiat 500 L's that are expected to arrive in Maryland from Fiat's Serbia assembly plant. According to the Maryland Port Administration (MPA), the new vehicle business will help create 220 Maryland jobs, including 80 direct jobs.

Pat Anderson was sworn in May 20 for his first term as a Beaumont port commissioner. Mr. Anderson is a sales executive for Becker Printing Company. He also serves the community as a volunteer deputy sheriff for Jefferson County and is active in a number of civic and charitable organizations in the Beaumont area.

Adolph N. Ojard, executive director of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, on May 23 announced his plans to retire this year. A maritime transportation veteran, Mr. Ojard was named port authority executive director in March 2003.

Subaru has selected the Georgia Ports Authority's Colonel's Island ro/ro facility in the Port of Brunswick as its gateway into the Southeastern United States. Subaru National Transportation Manager Larry Strug said Brunswick will serve two zones in Subaru's national distribution network, covering an area extending from North Carolina to Florida. Other Subaru gateway terminals are located at the ports of Baltimore; Richmond, Calif.; and Vancouver, Wash.

The 2013 shipping season is off to a fast start at the Port of Green Bay, with April tonnage skyrocketing 117 percent from last year's level. "We had a great April," said Dean Haen, Green Bay's port and solid waste director.

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has unanimously approved an energy policy designed to guide efforts by the Port of Long Beach to secure a more sustainable and resilient supply of power. The energy policy declares that the port will implement measures to increase efficiency, conservation, resiliency and renewable energy in collaboration with port tenants, utilities, other Long Beach city departments, industry stakeholders, labor unions, the Port of Los Angeles and others.

The Port of Longview reports operating revenue hit a record high in 2012 for the fifth year in a row. The annual report presented to the port's commissioners also revealed a nearly 20 increase in operating income from 2011, which was also a record year. The port said the revenue numbers reflect "the continued strength" of its diversified cargo base - bulk grains and agricultural products, calcined petroleum coke, logs, steel and wind energy equipment.

The Port of Los Angeles' Trade Connect program has earned the President's "E Star" award for Export Service. The port was among the 2013 honorees recognized for export sales or service during an "E" award ceremony on May 20 at U.S Department of Commerce headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The Port of Oakland Board of Commissioners announced May 23 it had appointed Chris Lytle the port's new executive director. Mr. Lytle has been executive director of the Port of Long Beach since November 2011 and before that served as the port's deputy executive director and chief operating officer from 2008 to 2011.

Robert L. Levy was recently nominated and confirmed as a Port of Portland commissioner by the governor and senate of the State of Oregon. Mr. Levy is a self-employed farmer of Windy River and L&L Farms in Hermiston, Ore.

The Virginia Port Authority (VPA) reports container throughput at its Hampton Roads maritime terminals grew in April for the fourth straight month, up 5.7 percent from a year ago to 179,370 TEUs, with increases of 6.1 percent and 5.3 percent, respectively, for exports and imports.

The Sacramento-Yolo Port Commission has approved a new master lease of its West Sacramento maritime facilities with SSA Pacific, Inc. (SSA). The new lease, which takes effect July 1, 2013, replaces the port's existing terminal operations management agreement with SSA.

Shipping Statistics Yearbook 2012 provides analytical data on shipping, shipbuilding, seaborne trade and seaport traffic throughout the world. The statistical data are generally current through 2011 and in some cases extend into 2012. The port section includes shipping traffic, cargo tonnage, and container movements through "selected" ports of individual countries, as well as world rankings based on total cargo volume and container throughput.
