On Friday, while in Los Angeles to host the Summit of the America’s, President Biden visited with leaders for the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles aboard the battleship USS Iowa, noting their efforts and progress in addressing the nation’s supply chain challenges. Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka thanked the president for his leadership and focus on the supply chain. “Our ongoing work with the president and his administration continues to focus on our nation’s ports and supply chain resiliency,” Seroka stated.

Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero, who participated in the summit’s “Los Angeles: A Path to Resiliency” panel to discuss the port’s development of a real-time cargo tracking tool and plans to improve environmental sustainability, said, “President Biden’s visit underscores his administration’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the Port of Long Beach can thrive as an economic engine for Southern California and the nation.” Cordero was also appointed last week to the Maritime Transportation System National Advisory Committee by U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. The Port of Freeport announced additional funding of $73.16 million for The Freeport Harbor Channel Improvement Project has been allocated in U.S. Army Corps of Engineers FY 2022 Work Plan. To date, a total of $117 million has been allocated to the project for construction since receiving a “new start” designation and initial construction funding in FY 2020.

This month, the Port of Hueneme earned a certification from Green Marine – the leading international environmental certification program for the maritime transportation industry.

The Hansen-Mueller Company has purchased Elevator A at the Duluth Seaway Port Authority and will bring the grain-handling facility back into active service. Previously owned by General Mills and inactive since 2015, Elevator A will complement Hansen-Mueller’s grain import and export business and generate revenue and increase grain tonnage through the port.

The Port of Long Beach has signed on to the Shanghai-Los Angeles Green Shipping Corridor, a partnership of C40 Cities, ports, shipping companies and cargo owners convened to create a zero-emissions trans-Pacific trade route. The partnership plans to achieve these goals by developing a “Green Shipping Corridor Implementation Plan” by the end of 2022.

Louisiana Legislature has committed $96.595 million to aid expansion projects at the Port of New Orleans, along with new transportation projects in Orleans and St. Bernard parishes, with the goal of driving international trade, while preparing for future growth.

May was the second-busiest month on record for the Port of Long Beach, and its strongest month so far in 2022. Dockworkers and terminal operators processed 890,989 TEUs in May, a 1.8% decline from May 2021, which remains the port’s busiest month in its 111-year history. Calendar year-to-date 2022 through May container volumes remained robust at the Port of Mobile posting 225,883 TEUs or an 11.6% gain over volumes handled last year during the same period. The Georgia Ports Authority moved an all-time high 519,390 TEUs in May, breaking the previous record of 504,350 TEUs set in October 2021. GPA’s May volumes grew by 8.5%, or 40,770 TEUs, compared to the same month last year.

Sean M. Duffy Sr., executive director of Big River Coalition and executive vice president of Louisiana Maritime Association, has been named 2022 C. Alvin Bertel Award recipient by the World Trade Center New Orleans (WTCNO). Duffy will be honored on June 24, during an award ceremony to be held at the Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans. The Bertel Award was established in 1967 and is presented each year to an individual who has made significant contributions to the Louisiana port and maritime community.
