AAPA Seaports Advisory
December 9, 2021

AAPA corporate members are invited to nominate individuals for consideration as AAPA's 2022 Port Person(s) of the Year. Each year this prestigious award is given to an individual/s whose outstanding work has made a significant contribution to public ports and/or maritime commerce either internationally or within a particular country or region. Typically, nominees are not members of the public port community itself, but friends, allies and ambassadors of ports. Congressman Peter DeFazio received the award in 2021, and Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works R.D. James was honored in 2020.

The formal criteria for eligibility, judging and submission can be found on the AAPA website. Please review the judging criteria and send at least one paragraph that describes why your nominee should receive the Port Person of the Year Award to Jen Wilk, director of corporate communications and marketing, no later than Friday, January 7, 2022. Selection of those receiving the honor for 2022 will be made by the AAPA Board.

AAPA extends its congratulations to U.S. Representative Peter DeFazio (D-OR), Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, on his plans for retirement in 2022. Chairman DeFazio has proven instrumental to seaports in his advocacy over the course of his time in this role. He was key to the restoration of Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) legislation in every Congressional session from 2014 through 2020 and championed the long-sought Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund reform included in WRDA 2020. AAPA had the honor of naming Chairman DeFazio as its 2021 Port Person of the Year. AAPA is grateful to the chairman and his dedicated staff for supporting and defending the role of seaports in the global economy.

GEOWEB® System Provides Industrial Yard with Permeable Surface
Presto Geosystems®
GEOWEB® Geocells provided a low-maintenance, permeable load-support surface at a staging area for a 10-acre industrial yard site in Pennsylvania. Heavy traffic at the steel fabricator’s facility caused severe rutting of the existing gravel surface and costly long-term maintenance problems.
The GEOWEB System was infilled with aggregate, which reduced stormwater runoff, controlled surface rutting, and minimized costs compared to conventional concrete or bituminous concrete.

The state-owned, public marine terminals of the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore received a top security rating for the 13th year in a row by the U.S. Coast Guard as part of an annual inspection of facilities. The assessment reviewed security procedures and protocols at the six public marine terminals. The Texas Department of Transportation (TXDoT) issued the Port of Brownsville a grade A score for its Local Government Risk Assessment based on the performance of the South Port Connector Road construction project.
