Mario Cordero, executive director of the Port of Long Beach and AAPA chairman of the board, testified before the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee hearing last week to kick off discussions for the next Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2022. The hearing, titled Examining the Benefits of Investing in USACE Water Infrastructure Projects, provided insights to the state of the nation’s water infrastructure, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ (Corps) role and WRDA, which authorizes the Corps navigation program to carry out federal navigation channel improvement projects. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg toured the Port of Baltimore last week, as a massive bipartisan infrastructure bill moves through the legislative process. Secretary Buttigieg’s visit provided a first-hand view of the importance of federal funding in helping ports make infrastructure improvements, generate jobs and grow the economy. Secretary Buttigieg was joined by Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, MD Transportation Secretary Greg Slater, Maryland Port Administration Executive Director William Doyle and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott.

PhilaPort’s Ed Henderson, senior director of finance and administration, is transitioning to the newly established position of senior director of business development and planning. While transitioning, he will continue his current responsibilities until a new director of finance is hired. In his new role, Henderson will focus on refining PhilaPort’s Master Plan, capital budget development, lease negotiations, and coordinating other strategic commercial issues.

VIPA’s Board of Governors authorized Executive Director Carlton Dowe to approve the long-term lease agreements with both shipping companies

Managing members of the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) voted this week to further environmental sustainability efforts by approving $560,000 to support the use of electric yard trucks in the Tacoma Harbor. Electric yard truck's zero-emissions technology are one element of the NWSA’s Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy to phase out emissions from seaport activities by 2050.
 
 
   
The Port of Palm Beach hosted three local fire departments for a joint fire rescue drill this week. The mutual aid drill included a hazmat response, technical rescue, and fire training involving shipping containers provided by Tropical Shipping. The Port of New York and New Jersey welcomed CAPE MAYOR, the first ship of Wan Hai Lines’ new service from Asia to the U.S. East Coast. The addition of this service provides better transit time and service coverage to meet growing consumer demand.
 
Stabilize Soft Subgrades for Heavy Loads -- GEOWEB® Geocells

Presto Geosystems worked closely with the US Army Corps to design a 36,000-square-foot haul road over weak soil using the GEOWEB® 3D system. Due to the low subgrade strength and anticipated heavy traffic patterns at the confined disposal facility, a dual-layer of GEOWEB Geocell reinforcement was required. The system performs as a load support structure, and with the aggregate infill, it provides additional on-site stormwater management.

Seafarers of all nationalities calling at the Port of Montréal can receive the COVID-19 vaccine, free of charge, through an initiative led by the Mariners' House of Montréal and the National Seafarers’ Welfare Board. More than 100 seafarers have been vaccinated through this collaborative effort.
