The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) issued a Notice of Funding Opportunity for freight infrastructure (INFRA) grants. The next round will distribute $906 million (of the $1 billion allowance in the FAST Act) among winning highway and intermodal projects. Ports interested in applying for FY 2020 grants must submit applications electronically in Grants.gov by 11:59 p.m. EST on February 25. Additional details are provided in the Federal Register notice.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is committed to ending human trafficking and has published a Strategy to Combat Human Trafficking, the Importation of Goods Produced with Forced Labor, and Child Sexual Exploitation that outlines its priorities for the next five years.

Montreal Port Authority (MPA) President and CEO Sylvie Vachon awarded the famous Gold-Headed Cane to Captain Qin Xiao Fei, Master of the Exeborg, marking the start of a new year of activity at the Port of Montreal. The Port of Oakland is seeking ambitious, creative and highly-motivated, full-time college students for its 2020 Summer College Internship Program. Through a competitive process, prospective applicants apply for paid internships in a variety of fields. Cranes, trains and grains are all part of the Port of Vancouver USA’s popular public tour program. The port is hosting 10 free public tours in 2020, which will include education on Columbia River navigation, international trade, environmental stewardship, and more. The Port of Sept-Îles presented the prestigious Port of Sept-Îles cane, a tradition now in its 33rd year, to the captain of the M/V Hinrich Oldendorff from Rotterdam, Netherlands, the first ship of 2020 to call at the Port of Sept-Îles.
 
Port Milwaukee welcomes Viking Cruises to the Great Lakes cruise market beginning 2022. The Viking Expeditions itineraries on the Great Lakes are planned from April through September with approximately 20 voyages that start or conclude at Port Milwaukee.
 
The Port of Long Beach navigated a trade dispute with China, new technology and evolving trade routes in 2019, culminating in its second-busiest year on record by moving more than 7.6 million TEUs. The Port of Montreal had its sixth consecutive record year in 2019. The port surpassed the 40 million tonne mark in cargo handled, reaching 40.5 million tonnes, an increase of 4.1% over 2018. Port of Oakland 2019 container volume decreased 1.8% from 2018, according to recent data. The port attributed the decline to fewer empty containers but said loaded import and export containers were at a record high. The Port of Sept-Îles announced an increase of more than 15% in volume handled at the port in 2019, at 29,292,000 tonnes compared to 25,363,000 tonnes the year before.
 
 
   
The Port of Hueneme welcomed new leadership as the Board of Harbor Commissioners unanimously voted Jess Ramirez to serve as Board President for 2020.
 
 
   
The Alabama State Port Authority (ASPA) and AutoMOBILE International Terminal (AIT) signed a concession agreement for a $60 million, finished automobile roll on/roll off (RO/RO) terminal currently under construction. Two new mobile harbor cranes arrived at the Port of Brownsville to increase the port’s on-dock lifting capacity due to higher demands of cargo volumes. As part of the Port of San Diego’s continued efforts to revitalize Seaport Village, the Board of Port Commissioners approved two new leases for the shopping, dining and entertainment center located on the Embarcadero along San Diego Bay.
