Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. joined Miami-Dade County on March 8 in a groundbreaking ceremony for the new cruise Terminal A at PortMiami. Due for completion in fall 2018, Terminal A will be homeport to several Royal Caribbean vessels, including megaships Allure of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas.
 
Terminal Operations: Oakland
California’s trucking industry earlier this month honored a Port of Oakland marine terminal for easing the state’s containerized cargo crunch. Oakland International Container Terminal received the first-ever Terminal Recognition Award for opening its gates at night.
 
Port People: Bellingham, Jacksonville, Portland (OR)
The Port of Bellingham has hired Chris Clark as its marine terminals business development manager. The governing board of the Jacksonville Port Authority (JAXPORT) announced March 8 that CEO Brian Taylor and the port authority have agreed to part ways. Eric Green, JAXPORT’s senior director of government affairs, is now its acting CEO. Kristen Leonard has returned to the Port of Portland as chief public affairs officer after serving since November 2015 as Oregon Governor Kate Brown’s chief of staff.

Port Traffic Metrics: Baltimore, Long Beach, New York/New Jersey, Virginia
Continuing last year’s record numbers, the public marine terminals in the Port of Baltimore posted more records in January. Reduced economic activity in Asia associated with the Lunar New Year contributed to lower February container volumes at the Port of Long Beach. Container volumes at the Port of New York & Jersey hit monthly highs in January of 296,432 lifts or 517,668 TEUs, for an increase of 8.3 percent compared to January 2016. The Port of Virginia® reports container throughput at its Hampton Roads marine terminals totaled some 2.8 million TEUs through February of the fiscal year that began last July 1, a 6.9 percent increase from the comparable period of FY 2015-16.
