The first commercial shipment from a Cuban cooperative to a private U.S. business in more than 50 years – two container loads of artisanal charcoal – arrived January 24 at Port Everglades aboard Crowley Maritime’s K Storm. Rising Asian demand for California farm products has sent agricultural exports soaring at the Port of Oakland, up 233 percent in the past five years.
 
 
   
The Port of Halifax is expecting its busiest cruise season ever in 2017 with passengers and vessel calls at record levels. The first cruise ship to sail to Cuba from Port Everglades since the 1950s departed January 17 on a 10-day cultural voyage to Havana, Cienfuegos, Santiago, and other Cuban ports of call.
 
A $125,000 workforce development grant from the Washington State Department of Commerce to the Port of Bellingham will help local solar panel manufacturer Pando Innovations, LLC (Itek Energy) streamline operations, increase efficiency and reduce costs. The Port of Everett has signed a new, two-year lease with Bellingham Yacht Sales for a location at the Port of Everett Marina.
 
 
   
The battleship IOWA, now an interactive naval museum on the Los Angeles waterfront, has become the latest vessel to plug into clean, electric shore-side power at the Port of Los Angeles. The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has launched an incentive program for marine vessels operating in the Port of Vancouver, aimed at addressing concerns about underwater vessel noise affecting at-risk marine life.

December was a month of double-digit grows for the Georgia Ports Authority’s container and Ro/Ro trades.  During that month as well, the GPA broke ground for the Appalachian Regional Port, a new inland terminal located in northwest Georgia. Port Saint John handled some 26.4 million metric tons of cargo in 2016, an increase of 2,419 tons compared to 2015. Gains by liquid bulk and breakbulk forest products offset declines in containerized and dry bulk cargo tonnage. 

The Port of Redwood City reports cargo shipments totaling 860,349 metric tons crossed its docks during the first six months of the fiscal year that began last July 1. Construction aggregates, scrap metal, and gypsum were the principal commodities. Cargo throughput at the Port of Sept-Îles totaled 23.0 million metric tons in 2016, an increase of 1.0 percent from 22.7 million tons in 2015.  Iron ore was the principal cargo, including shipments of 18.6 million tons by IOC Rio Tinto and 1.6 million tons by Tata Steel Minerals Canada.
 
The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay is adding two seasoned transportation executives to its senior staff:  Anna Soderstrom as chief commercial officer and Patrick Kerr as the director of rail operations, beginning January 30. The Duluth Seaway Port Authority recently welcomed new board members Patrick Boyle and Pete Stauber and a re-appointed member, Ray Klosowski. The Pasadena (TX) City Council on January 17 approved the reappointment of Roy D. Mease to the Port Commission of the Port of Houston Authority. The governing commission of the Port of Vancouver USA voted January 24 to hire interim CEO Julianna Marler as the port’s permanent CEO/Executive Director.
