The Georgia Ports Authority plans to invest $157 million at the Port of Brunswick during the next decade, or more than triple its investment of the past 10 years. An agreement that will allow construction to proceed on a ship-to-rail facility adjacent to GCT Bayonne was approved October 22 by the board of commissioners of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey. The project completes the agency's $600 million initiative to provide all of its major marine terminals with direct access to rail.

Container throughput at the Port of Baltimore’s public marine terminals hit a monthly high in August of 86,149 TEUs, an increase of 24.5 percent from August 2014. Last month’s box count of 317,411 TEUs gave the Port of Savannah its busiest September ever for container traffic and its seventh consecutive monthly record TEU volume. The Port of Long Beach last month achieved the busiest September and quarter in its 104-year history, signaling a return to pre-recession trade levels. Port Manatee’s container trade skyrocketed in the fiscal year ending September 30, 2015, thanks in part to a new shipping service linkage with the Mexican Port of Coatzacoalcos. Container volumes through The Northwest Seaport Alliance’s facilities in Seattle and Tacoma improved 5 percent third quarter 2015.

A study released by the Lake Charles Harbor and Terminal District underscores the economic impact of the Calcasieu Ship Channel on the Lake Charles region, the state of Louisiana and the nation, finding, for example, nearly one-third of jobs in the Lake Charles metro area are tied to the channel, the port authority, and maritime commerce.

The California Air Resources Board has approved a new technology that uses specialized barges which connect to the exhaust ports of container ships to scrub pollution. In 2013, the Port of Long Beach provided about $2 million in seed money to help test the Advanced Maritime Emissions Control System, which can now be marketed to vessel operators as an alternative to container ships plugging into the electrical grid to reduce emissions while at berth.

Two dredging projects are set to get underway next month at the Port of Redwood City – the first, to restore the main channel to its authorized depth of -30 feet and the second, to deepen berths at three wharves to their design depth of -34 feet MLLW.
