AAPA's Lighthouse Award application is now open, with submissions due by June 12. The Port Awards include nine specialty areas recognizing a wide range of port activities — with separate categories for both large and small ports.
New this year, the Beacon of Excellence Award will recognize one port submission that demonstrates exceptional impact, innovation, and results across multiple award categories. The application process has also been simplified with a streamlined format and clearer scoring criteria. Ports may submit a program or project in up to two categories per entry.
The program also includes the Maritime Innovator of the Year Award, recognizing AAPA Industry Solution Provider (ISP) Member industry partners advancing solutions for the port and maritime sector. Finalists will be announced in August, and winners will be celebrated at the 115th AAPA Annual Convention in New Orleans.
Have questions? AAPA will host a webinar in April to review Lighthouse Award application requirements and other details — more to come in the next few weeks. You can also contact Liz Mancini at LMancini@ports.org for assistance.

Ports of Indiana has opened a federally approved bonded storage facility at its Mount Vernon port, enabling the handling of its first barge shipment of aluminum, totaling approximately 1,650 tons. Developed in about six weeks to meet customer demand, the facility supports duty-deferred storage of imported goods, allowing businesses to defer payment of duties and taxes for up to five years. The site includes a 20,000-square-foot warehouse, a one-acre storage yard, and enhanced security infrastructure, and is operated by Indiana River & Rail Terminals. The facility expands the port’s capabilities to handle high-value commodities and strengthens its role as a multimodal logistics hub serving Midwest markets.

The Georgia Ports Authority will open its new inland port in Gainesville, Georgia, on May 4, 2026, providing direct rail access to the Port of Savannah’s global carrier network. The facility will offer five-day-a-week rail service, giving shippers an alternative to a 600-mile roundtrip truck route and is expected to reduce an estimated 26,000 truck trips in its first year. At full build-out, the $134 million inland port will have an annual capacity of 200,000 containers and serve a regional market of approximately 330 manufacturers. The project also includes local infrastructure improvements funded by GPA to reduce traffic impacts and improve access in the surrounding community.

The Port of Palm Beach celebrated the completion of its $30 million Port Infrastructure Development Program with a ribbon-cutting ceremony highlighting major upgrades. The project included redesign and automation of the main entrance, expanded truck lanes, installation of radiation portal monitors, and rehabilitation of 6.5 miles of on-port rail track. These improvements are expected to reduce truck wait times by 50% and enhance safety and security while supporting supply chain efficiency. The program was completed six months ahead of schedule and supported through partnerships with the Florida Department of Transportation and the U.S. Maritime Administration.

The Port of Oakland processed 163,254 TEUs in February 2026, representing a 16.7% decrease from January and a 14.5% decline year over year, influenced in part by reduced vessel activity during the Lunar New Year. Export volumes totaled 86,796 TEUs, exceeding import volumes of 76,458 TEUs, with exports showing greater stability despite overall declines.
