The Foundation for the Seaports of the Americas is excited to launch a new scholarship program in 2026, giving assistance to students pursuing careers in the ports and maritime industry. This scholarship represents a key step in the Foundation’s mission to support future workforce needs.
The scholarship will award $5,000 for every $50,000 in minimum Foundation balance, with the first award cycle opening later this year. Applications will open in May, and the scholarship will be awarded in August. The Foundation’s current balance is $95,000 — just $5,000 away from supporting a second scholarship! AAPA's Lighthouse Award application is now open, with submissions due by June 12. The Port Awards include nine specialty areas recognizing a wide range of port activities — with separate categories for both large and small ports.
New this year, the Beacon of Excellence Award will recognize one port submission that demonstrates exceptional impact, innovation, and results across multiple award categories. The application process has also been simplified with a streamlined format and clearer scoring criteria. Ports may submit a program or project in up to two categories per entry.
The program also includes the Maritime Innovator of the Year Award, recognizing AAPA Industry Solution Provider (ISP) Member industry partners advancing solutions for the port and maritime sector. Finalists will be announced in August, and winners will be celebrated at the 115th AAPA Annual Convention in New Orleans.
Have questions? AAPA will host a webinar in April to review Lighthouse Award application requirements and other details — more to come in the next few weeks. You can also contact Liz Mancini at LMancini@ports.org for assistance.

Ports of Indiana has opened its first international trade office in Ireland to support cargo growth and the development of a direct Europe-Indiana container service. The new office, based in Cork and Kildare, will be led by maritime trade veteran Brian Dooley. The initiative follows partnership agreements with the Port of Cork and Port of Antwerp-Bruges and aligns with plans to launch the Burns Harbor Container Terminal on Lake Michigan, with trial shipments expected later this year. Ireland shipped $32.4 billion in goods to Indiana in 2024, though most cargo did not move through Indiana ports. The trade office will focus on building European partnerships, expanding container services, and supporting international growth strategies.
