The Port of Seattle has authorized a public solicitation for a firm to lead the remedial design of the East Waterway cleanup, marking a key step in implementing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Record of Decision. This follows earlier authorizations for the Port to enter into agreements with the EPA, King County, and the City of Seattle to complete the design phase of the project. The East Waterway, part of the Harbor Island Superfund Site, is the final and most complex unit in a decades-long cleanup addressing contamination from historical industrial activity. The project aims to remove sediments containing PCBs, arsenic, mercury, dioxins/furans, and other pollutants harmful to human and ecological health. The cleanup is being carried out under EPA oversight and reflects a shared commitment to restoring the Duwamish River and protecting surrounding communities and habitats.
