The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) has welcomed Emirates Shipping Lines (ESL) to its gateway with the arrival of the M/V Bright on August 16, marking ESL’s inaugural U.S. service. This service continues the Sun Chief Express (SCX), offered in partnership with UWL, which provides the fastest transit times from Vietnam (18 days) and South China (15 days) to the U.S. Founded in 2006, ESL operates approximately 700,000 TEUs annually and calls 60 terminals weekly. SCX expands service coverage across Southeast Asia while also connecting U.S. inland markets such as Portland and Chicago, facilitating exports of agricultural products including cherries, potatoes, and protein. The service is recognized as one of the most on-schedule and reliable in the NWSA gateway.

The Connecticut Port Authority has appointed Melissa Root and Anthony Afriyie as Community Liaisons to support its efforts to grow the state’s maritime economy and strengthen community engagement. Root brings experience in business strategy, behavioral science, and stakeholder engagement, along with leadership roles at OpSail Connecticut and the Connecticut Schooner Race. Afriyie has extensive government and public outreach experience, having served as Press Secretary and Outreach Coordinator for Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro and as a Town Councilor in Stratford; he also serves on the state’s Equity and Environmental Justice Advisory Council. The appointments align with the Authority’s mission to advance Connecticut’s maritime economy through investments in the state’s three deepwater ports and numerous small harbors.

The Port of Brownsville will join the American Trucking Associations in celebrating National Truck Driver Appreciation Week from September 14–20. In 2024, the port recorded more than 450,000 truck movements, transporting goods for industries including steel, shipbuilding, wind energy, petroleum, and bulk cargo. According to the American Trucking Associations, truck drivers move over 11 billion tons of goods annually, representing nearly 73% of U.S. freight, with 80% of communities relying solely on trucking for deliveries. The port partners with regional institutions such as Texas State Technical College, Texas Southmost College, and Texas A&M to train commercial drivers, with 150–200 students graduating each year from CDL programs. As the only deepwater seaport on the U.S.-Mexico border, the Port of Brownsville depends on truck drivers to connect goods from ships and warehouses to markets across Texas and the nation.

The Port of Cleveland’s board of directors has selected Jeff Epstein as its next president and chief executive officer, with his appointment effective October 15 pending board approval. Epstein brings over 20 years of experience in economic development, public-private partnerships, and urban investment, most recently serving as the City of Cleveland’s Chief of Integrated Development. His recent work includes leading the Shore-to-Core-to-Shore financing strategy, managing $175 million of the city’s ARPA portfolio, and launching the North Coast Waterfront Development Authority. Epstein succeeds William Friedman and interim leader Dave Gutheil, who now becomes Chief Operating Officer after serving as Chief Commercial Officer since 2018. The Port conducted a national search to fill the role, underscoring its commitment to advancing growth, sustainability, and innovation in Northeast Ohio.

The Port of San Diego will place approximately 2,200 cubic yards of natural sand at Kellogg Beach in Point Loma beginning September 8, 2025, to help maintain and protect the shoreline from erosion. Work is expected to take about three weeks, with beach access restricted during construction hours on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The replenishment project, managed by Montano Pipeline Inc., spans two blocks between Kellogg Street and McCall Street. The sand has been reviewed and approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Port staff to meet environmental requirements and match existing beach conditions. Funded through the Port’s Major Maintenance Program, the project is not paid for with tax dollars.

Greenergy and the Belledune Port Authority have signed a long-term lease for a tank facility at the deep-water import terminal in northern New Brunswick. The facility will strengthen Greenergy’s supply capabilities, allowing it to use its global supply chains to provide reliable fuel security for the region. Imported products, including diesel, gasoline, ethanol, renewable diesel (HDRD), and biodiesel, will be available at the terminal or transported by rail through CN’s network to other Greenergy fuel terminals across Canada. The agreement supports the port’s development as a Green Energy Hub and creates new supply chains for an underserved region, with opportunities for local employment and contracting, including with Indigenous communities. Greenergy is also engaging with municipalities, residents, and First Nations as part of the next stage of development.
