The Fort Carroll Temporary Alternate Channel near Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge has been opened by the Unified Command to increase the Port of Baltimore's vessel traffic capacity. This new channel, which has a 20-foot depth, 300-foot horizontal, and 135-foot vertical clearance, is expected to restore about 15% of the port's commercial activity pre-collapse. Strict safety protocols remain in place with a 2,000-yard safety zone around the bridge and entry by permission only from the Captain of the Port.

Commissioned by C40 Cities, the ports, and conducted by the American Bureau of Shipping, the study provides a comprehensive forecast of maritime trade and the shift to zero- and near-zero emission fuels by 2050. The collaboration, marking significant progress since the corridor’s strategy debut at the UN Climate Change Conference in 2023, continues to strengthen with industry engagement aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and digitalizing maritime operations.
