Boosted by a 28-season high for iron ore, total maritime tonnage for the Port of Duluth-Superior finished the 2023 navigation season up 4.5% compared to 2022 and up 0.1% against the five-season average. The total float eclipsed 31.7 million short tons, including more than 21.5 million tons of iron ore, the most in a single season since 1995. The 2023 shipping season closed at the Port of Green Bay with 1,782,887 tons of materials handled. That amount is about 1% above last season’s tonnage of 1,765,834. While tonnage levels were similar over the past two seasons, the number of ships that visited the Port of Green Bay increased. Trade moving through the Port of Long Beach rose in January as retailers stocked up ahead of Lunar New Year, when east Asian factories typically close for up to two weeks. Dockworkers and terminal operators moved 674,015 TEUs last month, up 17.5% from January 2023. The Port of Los Angeles handled 855,652 TEUs in January, the second-best start to the year on record. Eclipsed only by the pandemic-induced cargo surge in 2022, it was the sixth consecutive month of year-over-year increases and surpassed January 2023 by 18%.

Dozens of local students took a trip outside of the classroom to Broward County’s Port Everglades to meet with Disney Cruise Line crew members and learn about careers in the maritime industry. Following the career panel, students explored Port Everglades, touring unique spaces, and getting a behind-the-scenes look at port and terminal operations.

In 2024, Albany, the capital of New York, will mark the 400th anniversary of its founding as Fort Orange, an early foothold for Dutch traders that helped create a new nation. The remains of the original fort are a stone’s throw away from the current economic and transportation ecosystem of the Port of Albany. This adjacency underscores how the Port has always been at the leading edge and has long served as a connector — through navigation, commerce, and community — from the Northeastern U.S. to the greater world.

The Port of Los Angeles has released an Initial Study/Notice of Preparation (IS/NOP) — the first step in the environmental review process — for the proposed Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach Goods Movement Workforce Training Facility. The Port of Los Angeles is the lead agency under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

The Port of Bellingham announced the start of a transformative two-year project to modernize and enhance the Bellingham Shipping Terminal. The Shipping Terminal Modernization Project will remove historic contamination from the Whatcom Waterway to restore water depths for ship access, install a state-of-the-art stormwater system, fortify the main dock, and stimulate job creation. The Port of Cleveland took a significant stride toward the future as its board approved the allocation of more than $32 million in federal and state grants to help rehabilitate and modernize a key warehouse and upgrade electrical infrastructure at its General Cargo Terminal.
