Cavotec Reels Power Record-Breaking STS Cranes

Cavotec engineers have once again manufactured cable reels that set new standards in operational performance with reels that provide electrical power for ship-to-shore (STS) container cranes that boast the highest lifting distance of any STS cranes anywhere in the world today.

The cranes, now installed at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) in Malaysia, are also the second tallest STS cranes currently in service; the tallest, made by Chinese crane manufacturer ZPMC for DP World, are in Dubai.

For this application, Cavotec has supplied eight electrical power reels with drums measuring 6.4m, and eight spreader reels with a maximum lifting distance of 73.5m. This equipment will enable PTP’s container terminal to optimise container handling in terms of productivity, safety and environmental performance.

Recently, Cavotec built one of the world’s largest mono-spiral motorized cable reels, with a drum diameter of 9.2m, for ZPMC for several STS cranes installed in ports in Asia and Europe.

Port of Portland Announces Rail Service to Assist Shippers

The Port of Portland has worked to create another new option for moving container freight by way of a railway partnership at Terminal 6. Starting this week, shippers can move their product on a rail shuttle to the Puget Sound ports. The new service, in partnership with BNSF Railway, will move containers between Portland and Seattle/Tacoma, where goods can be loaded onto ocean carriers. The rail service will operate five days a week.

"The rail service will complement the monthly container ship call by giving our local shippers another path to market," said Curtis Robinhold, Port of Portland executive director. "We hope to continue building on this momentum and interest at Terminal 6."

The port has also hired a consultant team to help determine the future role of container shipping in Portland with a sustainable business model for managing and developing the terminal. The port engaged an industry leader committee comprised of 22 members with diverse representation including exporters, importers, service providers, carriers, ports, labor (IBEW and ILWU), and legislators with strong shipper interests. The port, consultant team and committee will report their findings to the Port Commission this month.

A Cathay Pacific air freight option at Portland International Airport began operating in 2016 and moves goods such as footwear, apparel, electronics, cherries and seafood to Asia.

Port Tampa Bay Partners with Local Firm for Clean Energy Fueling Station

Port Tampa Bay has secured a deal with Integral Energy to bring a new fueling station that will include compressed natural gas pumps, a convenience store and restaurant. This week, Port Tampa Bay’s Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the construction.

The site at the southeast corner of Maritime and Causeway Boulevards will be open to both commercial and passenger vehicles, with four CNG pumps designed to service long-haul trucking, as well as plenty of surface parking for drivers wanting to refuel as well.

Compressed natural gas (CNG) is a clean fuel alternative to diesel and traditional oil-based gasoline. Natural gas is readily obtainable and CNG is created by compressing natural gas to less than one percent of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure. CNG is produced domestically from drilled natural gas wells or in combination with crude oil manufacturing.

The project will occupy 5.7 acres of land on Port property, and will also house a convenience store as well as a restaurant from yet to be determined vendors. Integral will make the unimproved site "construction ready," and provide all site infrastructure including underground facilities and utility connections.

The initial term of the lease is 20 years, beginning April 1, 2018. The annual rent in the first year would be $142,500 and increase to $265,000 in the second year. This agreement with Integral Energy is one of several deals approved by the Port Tampa Bay Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, resulting in $885,590 of new revenue during the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2018.
