Virginia Port Begins Offering Double-Stack Rail Service to Pittsburgh Intermodal Rail Terminal

Port of Virginia® users can now access Western Pennsylvania and Northwest Ohio via CSX’s daily rail service to Pittsburgh.

"This will help to expand an important and growing market for The Port of Virginia," said John F. Reinhart, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority. "We’re moving 36 percent of our volume by rail and continuing to reduce our dwell times for rail containers. The goal is to continue growing our rail capabilities and offerings and expanding service in that region is critical to the effort."

Double-stack trains operating between Hampton Roads and Pittsburgh will travel via CSX’s National Gateway route and its newly opened $60 million Pittsburgh Intermodal Rail Terminal in McKees Rocks (PA). Containers will be accessible around-the-clock at the 70-acre/28-hectare intermodal terminal.

The Pittsburgh terminal is the last piece of CSX’s National Gateway Initiative, an $850 million project focused on creating a network double-stack rail and intermodal terminals that connects East Coast markets to consumers, manufacturers and businesses in the Midwest.

In the fiscal year that ended June 30, the port moved 569,000 containers by rail, up 11.3 percent from 511,096 in FY 2015-16.
