Partnerships: Miami/Dakar

Miami and Dakar Become Sister Ports

PortMiami and the Port Authority of Dakar became parties to an International Sister Seaport Agreement at a ceremony August 9 at the PortMiami Executive Conference Room. The document was signed by PortMiami Director and CEO Juan M. Kuryla, PPM® and Dr. Cheikh Kante, managing director of Port Autonome de Dakar.

Dakar is a deep draft seaport located in Senegal on the West Coast of Africa, with throughput in 2015 of nearly 15.2 metric tons of general and bulk cargo and 400,000 container TEUs, and passenger traffic. Infrastructure includes grain, tanker, container, breakbulk, tanker, container, commercial fishing, and phosphate terminals. The port authority also operates a ferry service. Access channel depth is 13.5 meters/44.3 feet at mean low tide.

Established in 1998, PortMiami’s International Sister Seaports Program helps ports collaborate on the exchange of information and ideas, with the stated aim of increasing both cargo and cruise trade between ports. Miami now has some 85 signed agreements with ports in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
