Northwest Seaport Alliance: Double-Digit Gains for Container Traffic

Container throughput at the Northwest Seaport Alliance’s Seattle and Tacoma terminals increased by more than 14 percent in March and 10 percent in first quarter 2017.

The March numbers show gains from a year ago for the Alliance’s overseas container trade, including imports (25.9 percent), exports ( 9.2 percent) and empty containers ( 35.1 percent), resulting in a monthly total of 273,423 and a year-on-year increase of 20.8 percent. First quarter volume was the highest since the record year of 2005.

The Alliance’s domestic container trade fell 8.3 percent in March and 2.7 percent for the quarter. The downward trend is expected to continue through the end of the year because of economic conditions in Alaska.
