As an island in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic provides a unique setting for the development of an effective port system. Most of the country’s international trade and much of its domestic commerce move via water, thanks to the facilities and services afforded by its ports.

Autoridad Portuaria Dominicana (APD) is the regulating authority of the National Port System. It is responsible for managing and direction the marine ports and promoting the growth of the country’s foreign trade.

The system consists of 12 major port districts – six operated by APD, five operated under concession agreements, and one that is a private port. It also includes specialized terminals and the buoy system.

In 2015, these ports collectively handled some 23.3 million metric tons of cargo, 4,493 ship movements, nearly 1.4 million container TEUs, and 528,999 passengers.

Ranked by tonnage, the leading ports were Rio Haina (9.9 million tons), Caucedo (6.4 million tons), San Pedro de Macorís (2.2 million tons), and Puerto Plata (1.2 million tons). The top container handlers were Caucedo (826,935 TEUs) and Rio Haina (417,642). La Romana, Puerto Plata (Amber Cove), Santa Barbara, and Santo Domingo accounted for all of the passenger traffic.
