Major Investment to Extend Dock 10 at the Port of Trois-Rivières

The governments of Canada and the province of Quebec announced June 30 their commitment to invest millions of dollars for capital improvements at the Port of Trois-Rivières.

Extending Dock 10 eastward and filling the intervening space between this extension and the current dock 9. So doing will quadruple exterior storage space in this area to 12,000 square meters, allowing increased shipping of a variety of products and non-containerized general cargo.

The Dock 10 extension and storage area expansion are part of the improvements to a multi‑purpose zone totaling C$40 million in infrastructure investments between 2015 and 2017.

The federal government has earmarked up to C$16.3 million from the Gateways and Border Crossings Fund. From this amount, C$3.6 million is being invested specifically in the dock extension.

The Government of Quebec will contribute up to C$4.9 million from its program to support investments in maritime transportation infrastructure [Programme de soutien aux investissements dans les infrastructures de transport maritime].

The Trois-Rivières Port Authority will cover the rest of the project costs, estimated at C$18.8 million. In addition, the private sector will spend, C$15 million for cargo handling equipment.

The June 30 announcement marks the final stage of development for the port authority’s the multi-purpose zone. Sheds 24 and 25 have been completed. Terminal 13 construction is due for completion by the end of the year. Work on Dock 10 will begin in 2016.

Located on the St. Lawrence River about midway between Québec and Montreal, the Port of Trois-Rivières handles approximately 3.0 million metric tons of bulk and breakbulk cargo annually.
