Corpus Christi Bulk Materials Terminal Wins Environmental Award

The Port Corpus Christi Bulk Materials Terminal was the winner of Coastal Bend Bays Foundation Conservation & Environmental Stewardship Award for Industry. Bulk Terminal Manager Eric Battersby accepted the award on behalf for the port authority at the Coastal Bend Bays Foundation’s 13th Annual Conservation & Environmental Stewardship Awards Banquet December 3 in Corpus Christi.

The Texas Coastal Bend, the flat area of land along the Texas Coast, is the location of cities such as Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Beaumont, Galveston, Freeport and Houston as well as the Texas barrier islands.

The CBBF Awards Program honors outstanding Coastal Bend citizens, educators, businesses, governing bodies and other entities. Winners are chosen due to significant contributions in the areas of habitat conservation, enhancement, protection, restoration or preservation of the Coastal Bend’s precious natural resources, or in educating the region’s youth and adults about the importance and value of our natural surroundings.

The industry award is chosen for a port-related Coastal Bend business or industry that exhibits leadership in protection or conservation of Coastal Bend natural resources, and for placing a high priority on our region’s environment. The Port Corpus Christi Bulk Terminal was recognized for taking a proactive approach beyond regulatory requirements with concern for the environment. Environmental improvements at the Bulk Terminal are implemented with an aim to control fugitive dust emissions and storm water runoff from bulk material handling and storage operations.

"The improvements made at the facility to date are a direct result of the awareness of the issues and efforts by Port Corpus Christi personnel, as well as good cooperation and collaboration with our tenants," said Sarah Garza, the port authority’s director of environmental planning and compliance. "With further environmental improvements planned for the facility and operations, we expect even better results."
