What’s in the Box? Top Containerized Commodities at Port of Oakland

The Port of Oakland handles well over 2.0 million TEUs annually, accounting, it says, for 99 percent of the containerized goods that come through Northern California. That includes inbound shipments ranging from furniture and glassware to machinery. Outbound, containers are filled with products like edible fruits and nuts, meat and beverages.

Asia is the port’s top trading partner with a 76 percent share of its container business, followed by Europe with 14 percent, and Australia, New Zealand and Oceania with 5 percent. The remaining five percent is with other countries.

The total value of imports and exports through the Oakland seaport exceeds $40 billion annually.
