U.S. Virgin Islands: Roberto Cintron Elected Port Authority Board Chairman
Roberto C. Cintron was elected chairman of the board of directors of the Virgin Islands Port Authority in January. He was appointed to a three-year term on the port authority board in April 2014 as a private citizen representing St. Croix.
Mr. Cintron is president of Jay-Ro-Mar, Inc. and a co-owner of New Wave Development. He also provides private engineering consulting, land development and survey services. Currently a member of the Board of Land Use Appeals, he previously served as the assistant commissioner of U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) Department of Public Works for more than five years. He holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the University of Florida.
The board also elected USVI Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty vice chairperson, and Allison Petrus secretary. A career hospitality industry professional, Ms. Nicolson-Doty is past president of the U.S. Virgin Islands Hotel & Tourism Association. Mr. Petrus is a U.S. Army veteran, a former USVI senator and now the owner and operator of four Subway franchises and a gas station on St. Thomas. He was appointed to a three-year term on the port authority board in June 2012 as a private citizen representing St. Thomas in June 2012.
The port authority board is comprised of nine members, four of whom serve ex-officio and at the governor’s pleasure, namely the commissioner of the Department of Tourism, the attorney general, the commissioner of the Department of Public Works and the chairperson of the Economic Development Authority Board. The other board positions are reserved for private citizens appointed by the governor with the consent of the Virgin Islands legislature. Two of the five must come from St. Croix, two from St. Thomas and one from St. John. Each is appointed to three-year terms and eligible for re-appointment.
