AAPA Facilities Engineering Seminar and Expo, November 6-8 in Vancouver (BC), attracted an attentive audience with its focus on the latest developments and technology of interest to port engineering professionals. The AAPA Facilities Engineering Committee chaired by Elizabeth Ogden, director of architecture, engineering and IT at PortMiami, developed the two-and-a-half-day program.

Some seminar highlights:

• Donald Brinkman, director of engineering, maintenance and development at the Port of Lake Charles, moderated a panel that focused on technological developments in container terminals, as well as the areas of bulk and liquid bulk. 
• Ms. Ogden’s panel examined the development and design of cruise terminals at Port Metro Vancouver and PortMiami.
• Willy Yung, director, engineering and maintenance, at Port Metro Vancouver, led a panel on capital projects in Oakland, Vancouver and Miami that examined a wide range of situations.
• Patricia Gaynor, manager of design engineering at the Maryland Port Administration, shared a case study on tried and emerging technologies used to remediate infrastructure deterioration. Practical aspects of timber rot, corrosion and compromised concrete were discussed in terms of remediation and encasement schemes for sheet pile bulkheads.
