2013 AAPA Facilities Engineering, IT and Environmental Award Winners

Four months ago (Advisory, June 3, 2013) AAPA announced the winners in its 2013 Communications Awards program. Just recently, winning entries were selected in its three other awards programs: Facilities Engineering, Information Technology and Environmental Improvement.

The Facilities Engineering Awards program was established in 2003 for the purpose of recognizing excellence, innovation and performance by port engineering professionals. Entries are judged on the basis of engineering innovation, means of contracting, speed of construction, budget success and other measures, as appropriate. This year’s winner is the Port of New Orleans’s entry, "The Riverfront Cold Storage Facility."

The AAPA Information Technology Awards program, which dates from 2002, highlights port technology accomplishments in the areas of Port Operations and Management Systems and in Improvements in Intermodal Freight Transportation. Award criteria include the level and nature of benefits, the creativity of the solutions or programs, whether the project or program results are apparent, the cost effectiveness of the activity or the program, and the transferability of the technology or idea to the port industry.

The winner of this year’s AAPA IT Award is Port Fourchon, whose entry "Maritime Domain Awareness System" was submitted in the Port Operations and Management Systems category.

Since 1973, AAPA’s Environmental Improvement Awards program has recognized activities that benefit the environment at its member ports. The four distinct project award categories are Environmental Enhancement; Mitigation; Stakeholder Awareness, Education & Involvement; and Comprehensive Environmental Management. Award criteria include the level and nature of the environmental benefits, beautification or community involvement, the level of independent involvement and effort, creativity, project or program results, cost effectiveness and transferability to the port industry.

The winner is the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority for "Flotsam & Jetsam: Leading Environmental Restoration in Cleveland Harbor" entry in the Environmental Enhancement category.
