Virginia Cargo Volumes Climb for Third Consecutive Month

The Virginia Port Authority (VPA) reports container throughput at its Hampton Roads maritime terminals grew in March for the third straight month, up 7.9 percent from a year ago to 169,390 TEUs, with increases of 3.1 percent and 13.1 percent, respectively, for exports and imports.

"We’ve seen growth in January, February and March and our year-to-date TEU volume is up 6.2 percent, a difference of nearly 30,000 TEUs,” said Rodney W. Oliver, PPM®, the VPA's interim executive director. "Given what we’ve seen thus far in 2013, we’re optimistic about the coming months and focusing all of our energy on leveraging this port’s assets to build volumes.”

During March as well, containers shipped in and out of the port by rail and between Hampton Roads and Richmond via the 64 Express barge service jumped by 11.4 percent to 4,262. Other March data reported by the VPA show gains of 5.0 percent for general cargo tonnage and 14.3 percent for containers arriving and departing the port by rail.
