Brownsville Navigation District Lowers Property Tax Rate for 22nd Consecutive Year

The board of commissioners of the Brownsville Navigation District (BND) voted August 19 to lower the tax rate to $0.040667 per $100 of assessed value, a 3.17 percent decrease from the 2014 rate of $0.042000.

Under the new rate, the owner of a typical home valued at $85,648 (value provided by the Cameron County Appraisal District) would pay about $34.54, a $0.77 decrease compared to 2014.

The BND tax rate has been lowered annually since 1983 – 22 consecutive years.

The BND was created as a taxing entity in 1929. The district includes most of the city of Brownsville, Rancho Viejo and Los Fresnos, as well as rural areas of Cameron County. In total, 41.7 percent of Cameron County, or 368 square miles, make up the district.

For 2014, the BND received property tax revenues totaling $3,085,433, of which $2,503,579 was used for general obligation bond debt and $581,854 for maintenance and operations. The district also received $138,100 in penalties and interest for a combined 2014 tax, penalty and interest total of $3,223,533.

"Our commissioners have always been mindful of not placing too heavy a tax burden on homeowners," said Brownsville Port Director Eduardo A. Campirano. "Through responsible and careful fiscal planning, we have been able to continuously lower the district’s tax rate in response to rising property valuations."
