Prince Rupert Welcomes Maersk Line Service

The Prince Rupert Port Authority on August 25 welcomed Maersk Line as the latest ocean carrier to offer weekly service at the Fairview Container Terminal.

Maersk Line has added Prince Rupert as the first North American port in its amended TP8 transpacific service, which will make its first call in Prince Rupert this autumn. Maersk's inaugural Prince Rupert call occurred August 27 as a limited-time extension of the carrier’s TP Alaska Eastbound service.

"The addition of Maersk Line as a dedicated marine carrier is another milestone in the unprecedented growth we’ve achieved at Fairview Container Terminal since it began operation in 2007," said Port Authority President Don Krusel. "This new service is a validation of the advantages our port has brought to transpacific trade, and we look forward to building relationships with Maersk and the many new customers that will benefit from the supply chain solution offered through our gateway."

Box traffic has skyrocketed at Fairview Container Terminal since it opened almost seven years ago, from just 16,703 TEUs in 2008 to a record 618,170 in 2014. Through July, the TEU count was leading last year’s by a phenomenal 30.7 percent.

Fairview Container Terminal has a current capacity of 850,000 TEUs annually; a recently announced second phase expansion will boost it to 1.35 million TEUs by mid-2017.
