Longview: Former Operations Director Averett Appointed to Port Commission

Port of Longview Commissioners voted unanimously last week to appoint port industry veteran Doug Averett to fill the remaining two years of Lou Johnson’s term on the commission. Mr. Averett retired four months ago after 28 years as a Longview port employee, the final 12 years as director of operations. Mr. Johnson resigned from the commission in June for personal reasons.

Mr. Averett was selected from a pool of eight candidates "because of his deep understanding of the port and its facilities, coupled with his long working relationships with port customers, staff and the longshore union."
He will be sworn in at the commission’s regular meeting, on August 25.

"I felt like there needed to be continuity," said Mr. Averett, who noted that the port was facing the possibility of two new commissioners without maritime backgrounds. Another commission seat will up for will be up for election this fall; current Commissioner Darold Dietz is not seeking re-election.

"We had some very strong contenders for the position," Commissioner Dietz noted. "Ultimately, it was Doug’s unique industry insights and expertise that set him apart and those will prove to be valuable assets as we move forward."

The board of commissioners is comprised of three elected members representing the citizens of the port district. Commissioners serve six-year terms and set governing policy for the Port of Longview. Bob Bagaason is the third commissioner.
