Flagler Global Logistics Breaks Ground on Canaveral’s First Inland Port Facility

Flagler Global Logistics broke ground July 27 on the new Titusville Logistics Center, marking the start of construction of Port Canaveral’s first multimodal inland port facility. This milestone was celebrated in a ceremony attended by local dignitaries, business and community leaders, and Port Canaveral and Flagler Global Logistics executives.

The Canaveral Port Authority is the first tenant at Flagler Global Logistics’ Titusville Logistics Center, having inked a landmark build-to-suit lease agreement last year. Due for completion early next year, the 246,240-square-foot facility will support the port’s expanding cargo and container terminals.

"The development of Port Canaveral’s inland facility at the Titusville Logistics Center will help further leverage the region’s centralized location and poise North Brevard County as a major national and international cargo hub," said Chris Scott, president and CEO of Flagler Global Logistics. "The facility has been designed to offer cargo importers, exporters and distributors more storage capacity than any surrounding warehouses on a site with unparalleled connectivity via rail, air and sea."

The Titusville Logistics Center will accommodate up to 2.9 million square feet of industrial development, offering flexible warehouse and distribution options with multi-modal transportation connections.  Located adjacent to Space Coast Regional Airport and minutes away from Port Canaveral, the center will offer direct connection to the Florida East Coast Railway and easy access to US1 and I-95.

"Our new inland port facility is a critical step in the port’s overall expansion plan to attract more container business and elevate our strategic value within the national supply chain by offering a more cost-saving, efficient route to move goods throughout the southeast," said Port Canaveral CEO John E. Walsh.  "We partnered with Flagler Global Logistics because of the company’s reputation for developing world-class logistics facilities."

Georgia: New Inland Terminal to Open in 2018

A Memorandum of Agreement establishing the Appalachian Regional Port in Chatsworth (GA) was signed July 28 by Gov. Nathan Deal, the Georgia Ports Authority, Murray County and CSX Transportation. Its service area will include North Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and parts of Kentucky.

"This new inland terminal will open the door for economic opportunity and job creation for Northwest Georgia and the region," said Gov. Deal. "By providing a direct link to the Port of Savannah, the Appalachian Regional Port will create and expand international markets for businesses, and further the economic success of the Southeastern U.S."

Operated by the Georgia Ports Authority, the Appalachian Regional Port will deliver goods to the GPA's Garden City Terminal in the Port of Savannah.

"The public-private partnership established today, which includes direct rail access to the new inland port, will expand access for domestic and international shippers, providing increased options for cost-effective, environmentally friendly transportation services," said Clarence Gooden, executive vice president and chief commercial officer of CSX.

Port officials estimate the CSX rail route will reduce Atlanta truck traffic by 40,000 moves annually, creating a new intermodal option to and from the Port of Savannah. Each container moved by rail to the Appalachian Regional Port will offset 355 truck miles on Georgia highways, according to the GPA.

"This new inland port is located in an industrial belt, which includes the production and export of carpet and flooring, automobiles and tires," said GPA Executive Director Curtis Foltz. "The Appalachian Regional Port will make those commodities more competitive in the global market by saving port customers money on inland transit costs. Moving more containers to rail will also reduce carbon emissions."

The Appalachian Regional Port will be Georgia's second such facility. In 2013, Gov. Deal, Cordele Intermodal Services and the GPA signed a memorandum of understanding for the Cordele Inland Port. The Cordele facility handles cotton, clay, lumber and other agribusiness exports for customers in Georgia, Alabama and Florida.

The new inland port will sit on 42 acres in Northwest Georgia's Murray County and feature on-terminal rail. The site is adjacent to U.S. 411 and has access to Interstate 75. It will handle import, export and domestic cargo.

The Appalachian Regional Port will open by 2018 with an annual capacity of 50,000 containers. A development plan calls for doubling capacity within 10 years.

Saint John (NB): Provincial Government to Invest C$68 million in Westside Marine Terminal Modernization

The provincial government of New Brunswick will invest up to C$68.3 million through its Strategic Infrastructure Initiative over seven years towards the expansion and modernization of the Westside terminals at the Port of Saint John.

"This important strategic infrastructure investment will create jobs and long-term economic growth for the port city, the Fundy region and our entire province," said Premier Brian Gallant. "The expansion of the Port of Saint John will increase the competitiveness of businesses in the Saint John area and across the province allowing us to increase exports."

Mr. Gallant and Economic Development Minister Rick Doucet made the announcement July 30 with other government and senior officials of the Port of Saint John. Funding is conditional on the federal government and the Port of Saint John each having sources of funding.

The Strategic Infrastructure Initiative project will modernize the Rodney and Navy Island terminals and leverage positive aspects of the current infrastructure to allow the port to accommodate larger vessels. New operational systems and technology will also be installed to enhance cargo-handling capabilities.

According to a press statement from the premier’s office, the project will create nearly 2,000 jobs and give a $152 million boost to the province’s gross domestic product.

"This is an exciting day for the Port of Saint John and our stakeholders, as it demonstrates the importance of the port to the entire province and its role in helping to grow the provincial economy," said Port Authority Chairman Peter Gaulton, chair of the port. "On behalf of the board of directors and management of the Port of Saint John, I extend thanks to Premier Gallant and to his entire team for providing the final funding required to make this project a reality."
