Maryland: Maersk Returns to the Port of Baltimore

Maersk Lines resumed service July 1 at the Port of Baltimore, where it was welcomed by a delegation of congressional state and local officials headed by Maryland Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford. Three Maersk container services will be calling weekly at the Maryland Port Administration’s Seagirt Marine Terminal, bringing an estimated 31,000 containers through the port annually. They include services to the Far East, the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Maersk’s presence means that Baltimore is now served by the world’s four largest container shipping companies.

"It’s a great day for Maryland with Maersk, the world’s No. 1 container shipping line, announcing its return to the Port of Baltimore," said Gov. Larry Hogan. "Word is getting out that Maryland is open for business, and industry around the world is responding. The addition of Maersk Line gives the port even more momentum going forward as we await the completion of the Panama Canal expansion and the arrival of larger ships."

Seagirt Marine Terminal is served by 11 ship-to-shore gantry cranes, four of them super-Post-Panamaxers capable of spanning 22 container rows, and 50-foot berth and channel depths.

"Today’s global supply chains require stable, smooth-running transportation services that enhance supply chain integrity and improve productivity," said Michael White, president of Maersk Line North America. "With the Port of Baltimore, we will deliver dependable services and resources so our customers’ supply chains stay on schedule and run efficiently. I’m pleased to have our TP2, TA2, and TA5 services calling at the Port of Baltimore."
