Canadian Government to Invest $16.3 Million in the Port of Trois-Rivières

Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec joined Board Chairman Cléo Marchand and President and CEO Gaétan Boivin of the Trois-Rivières Port Authority (TRPA) on June 28 in announcing a major investment to improve the Port of Trois-Rivières.

Located on the St. Lawrence River between Quebec and Montreal, the Port of Trois-Rivières, handles approximately 55,000 trucks, 11,000 freight cars, 240 ship calls and nearly 4.0 million tons of cargo annually.

The project includes the reconstruction of Pier 13, construction of a new roll-on/roll-off ramp at Pier 10 and construction of enclosed storage facilities at Pier 19, hangars 24 and 25. These improvements will increase the port’s outside dock storage space by 40 percent and add 65,000 metric tons of enclosed solid bulk cargo storage capacity by the fall of 2016. Construction of this new multipurpose terminal is expected to generate more than 300 direct and indirect jobs, while the operation of the terminal will result in approximately 70 jobs.

The government of Canada is committing up to 50 percent of the total eligible costs to a maximum of C$16.27 million from the federal Gateways and Border Crossings Fund. This funding is conditional on the project meeting applicable federal eligibility requirements and the signing of a contribution agreement.

The port authority will be responsible for the balance of the project funding, an estimated C$16.82 million. Additionally, the private sector is expected to spend nearly C$15 million for the purchase of new equipment at the terminal.

"This investment will enable the port to open a new multifunctional terminal, a project worth approximately $33.09 million, thanks to the transformation of Pier 13 and the addition of storage space," said Mr. Boivin. "The terminal, strategically located at the heart of the port's facilities, will increase economic activity for the country and for the region. The new facilities will be able to accommodate multiple projects and all types of cargo: solid and liquid bulk, general and oversized cargo, and semi-trailer transport in support of national and international trade."
