AAPA conducted its 2015 Commissioners Seminar June 16-18 in Halifax (NS) time. Hosted this year in true Haligonian spirit by the Halifax Port Authority, this traditional program provides a thorough examination of the appropriate role for members of port authority governing bodies.

The program opened with an interactive session on "Issues of Most Relevance to Public Port Governing Boards" facilitated by Ron Brinson, PPM®, former AAPA president and retired president & CEO of the Port of New Orleans, that sparked a lively exchange of questions and comments. AAPA Law Review Committee Chair Tom Schroeter of the Port of Houston Authority spoke on "port legal issues and your personal exposure as a board member." Jim Brennan of Norbridge Inc. and Bill Ralph of R.K. Johns & Associates reviewed global economic and industry developments pertaining to the container, bulk and dry bulk shipping sectors.

Tim Merry of Mahone Bay (NS) emphasized the importance of engagement and described key strategies for successful execution. Tim and the audience worked together to identify where in the port setting engagement might have the greatest impact. This mural captures their ideas and comments:

A joint presentation by the port authorities of Halifax and Trois-Rivières focused on maximizing the effectiveness and results in the process of management-board relations. Speakers included CEO Gaétan Boivin and Chairman Cleo Marchand of Trois-Rivières, along with CEO Karen Oldfield and Chief Legal Counsel Lawrence Freeman of the Halifax.
