Clarkson's Register is a comprehensive guide to tanker vessels of all sizes and classifications. These include VLCC and ULCC crude oil carriers, general purpose tankers, naval auxiliaries, combined carriers, and vessels specifically designed to handle chemicals, asphalt, methanol, or wine.

The Tanker Register opens with a review and analysis of the 2014 tanker market. The remainder of the Register is organized in four sections:
  • Statistical tables and graphs depicting the evolution and technical character of the tanker fleet, with separate analyses of particular types such as double hull and double bottom tankers, bulk/oil carriers, tankers with coated tanks, etc. Also provided is a census of vessel scrappage, orders, and deliveries.
  • Ship finder indexes (grouped by dwt class and type – ULCC/VLCC, Aframax, Suezmax, Handy size, Panamax, ore/oil, bulk/oil, etc.). There is also an index of ex-names of vessels.
  • Vessel-specific information:  name and ex-name; ownership; flag of registry; builder; class/type; hull dimensions and classification; tonnages (dwt, gross tons, etc.); tank capacity and layout; cargo handling parameters; and propulsion data (engine type, horsepower, fuel consumption in tons/day, bunker capacity). Also includes a glossary of technical terminology and abbreviations.
  • A directory to owners, including vessel rosters, addresses, websites, emails, and phone and fax numbers.
The Register reveals that as of January 1, 2015, the world tanker fleet consisted of 5,918 vessels with total deadweight capacity at an all-time high of more than 508.6 million metric tons. On order were 61.5 million tons of capacity and a total of 822 vessels in all size ranges, including 26 crude oil carriers with an average deadweight capacity of 320,000 tons.
