Port of Savannah Ramps up Frozen Cargo Capacity

The Georgia Ports Authority board last week approved the expenditure of $5.85 million for 20 new refrigerated container racks at Garden City Terminal in the Port of Savannah to accommodate an expanding cold storage market.
By adding 20 more racks, GPA will increase its refrigerated container rack slots by 480 to a total of 2,496. Counting 600 chassis plug-ins, Savannah's total capacity will grow to 3,096 refrigerated boxes.

According to the GPA, Savannah handles nearly 40 percent of U.S. containerized poultry exports, much of them supplied by Georgia farmers. Data cited by the GPA indicate that agriculture’s economic impact on Georgia amounts to more $75 billion and 375,000 jobs. The port links the state’s poultry, pecans, peanuts and blueberries producers to buyers worldwide.

"We continue to experience high demand from existing customers wanting to move their distribution closer to the port," said Ross Maple, Director of Business Strategy for Nordic Cold Storage. "Savannah's additional racks will allow us to meet customer demands, as increases in exports are expected as poultry consumption worldwide continues to grow, while an increase in frozen imports is anticipated with the expansion of the Panama Canal."
